Colin Elliott

Daily bookkeeping turned out to be too much of a time commitment for me. Over the three weeks that i maintained this blog I learnt little about my spending.

Instead perhaps I will write about things of more interest (even to me), like Glasgow’s flyering community. Every West End resident is familiar with the name Colin Elliott. Every couple of months these hand printed flyers land on our doormats. Be it a doo-wop group or a  drying rack pulley replacement service, he’s always inviting our calls.

Another great flyer that we recently received:

Friday 7th December

£1.10 juice + £1.30 sandwich + £3.00 coffee & cake + £0.50 juice + £2.50 falafel = £8.40.

Though today’s modest total was helped considerably by (free)  gallery openings with (free) drinks, it was hindered by spending too long in the lab and requiring quick, local nourishment.

Wednesday 5th December

I spent a further £8 on foodstuffs and eventually came up with this:

Fajitas filled with roasted, spiced butternut squash, onion, sweetcorn, bell peppers and courgette with jalapeno nachos, guacamole, tomato salsa etc etc….. lots of left overs.

Tuesday 4th December

Today I spent £10.61 at Lidl on ingredients for tomorrow’s house dinner. I’ll post a picture of the relevant foodstuffs once they have been sculpted into something more aesthetically appealing than a pile of groceries.

Monday 3rd December

I haven’t written about or kept track of anything for almost a week. Partially because I was sick and spending a lot of time asleep, partly because I was busy in the lab, and also partially because Russell was visiting,
In the week i’ve spent about £450 I think. I exchanged it for a wide variety of things including:

  • rent
  • Phone credit
  • Tickets for The Darjeeling Limited and Drawing Restraint 9
  • A ticket to see Akron Family, though I didn’t make it to the show.
  • A new hat and new mittens, to replace losses.
  • multiple meals and many groceries including a lot of soup, vegan fajitas, and the ingredients for apple cake.
  • A few cans of Grafen Walder and a bottle of cheap Pinot Grigio.
  • tumble drying of my sheets and towels
  • subway and train tickets
  • many beers, juices and coffees.

I’m going to have a totally frugal few weeks now because my student loan is almost all gone.

Tuesday 27th November

Today I spent £3.50 on a Silvine spiral bound notebook. I always buy the same notebooks, though they are expensive, because the pages are narrow ruled and i like writing small without leaving great gaps between lines.

I spent £0.50 on candy, £5.80 on a round of drinks, and £10 to see Peter Brokerick and Efterklang. Expensive, but it was a nice sitting show.

Total £19.80 – not good, and i doubt tomorrow will be better.

Monday 26th November

Today I spent £0.80 on a cereal bar.

I’m getting really bored of doing this. As evidenced by this weekend’s spending I don’t think it’s helping.

Sunday 25th november

£13.75 on groceries (including “university tested” toothbrushes and “Passe” brand toilet paper)

£7.00 to see Castanets and Dirty Projectors, £12 for a Castanets album, and £6.20 on San Miguel at the show.

£1.00 on 24 batteries, none of which worked, £2.49 on four batteries that worked.

£1.00 on a subway ticket, £1.45 on candy, £1.50 on mulled wine and £1.10 on Tennants beer.

minus £7 because I already sold the Castanets album – he was great live, but on record i can’t stand his voice.

£38.99 this weekend. Very poor.

Friday 23rd November

Today I spent £4.05 on a lunch – it was dumb, but i was very hungry and in a rush with a deadline. I later spent £0.40 on a bag of hula hoops and £0.80 on a calippo water-ice.

Mark and I intended to see a lot of noise bands tonight, but wandered off instead to see Scout Niblett, who canceled at the last minute. In despair we spent all our ticket money on drinks in 4 different bars. At around £5 a round I spent £20.

£25.25 is a bad day.
